I grew up hearing stories about my ancestors: family who knew Joseph Smith, who crossed the plains, and who fled Armenia after converting to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But the details were always fuzzy. I knew names and a few dramatic moments, and I had no real way to research what their lives were actually like.

In summer 2025, I was on a train from Stockholm to Copenhagen, crossing the Øresund, when I remembered I had ancestors from both countries. On a whim, I took a screenshot of one ancestor's FamilySearch profile and sent it to ChatGPT with a simple question:

What would daily life have been like for this person, in this place, at this time?

The first thing it told me surprised me. My Danish ancestors weren't from mainland Denmark at all. They were from Bornholm, a small island out in the Baltic Sea. I'd had their records for years and never noticed. Suddenly "Born 1796, Denmark" wasn't just a date. It was a person who grew up on an island, in a world before electricity and photography, that I had never pictured.

That train ride sparked an idea. What if there was a tool that could do this automatically? Take the facts in a family tree and turn them into rich, contextual stories that help you see your ancestors as they actually lived?

Around the same time, I was looking for ways to use my technical skills in areas I was passionate about. Family history had always been something I loved—but now I saw a real problem I could solve. People had massive family trees full of data, but no easy way to understand what those lives actually looked like.

I decided I had to build this. Not just for myself, but for everyone who's ever stared at a birth date from 1823 and wondered: What was it really like?
